ABOUT THE TEAM AT BUSWISE :

Having worked with Bus Operators in Sydney and Brisbane the most stressful and error prone area of the Operations Environment was found to be the Operations Room where the most complex decisions need to be made in the most stressful surroundings (when things were not going well) and usually with insufficient knowledge. Together with a number of Operations Managers, Supervisors and staff ( in total about 50 years of experience ), BusWise is the culmination of 40 years of computing experience addressing this problem.

The totally vital Dispatch area was chosen as the heart of BusWise and the humble whiteboard is replaced with a computerised Daily Operations Schedule. The whiteboard or a copy of the all important Drivers Roster was subjected to many corrections, scribbled notes and moments of serious consideration. When something went wrong there would be a great deal of reference to spreadsheets, filed documents, printed lists and sundry PostIt Notes in various places around the room. Then there were the phone calls to HR to find the phone numbers that had not been updated on the list and to the workshop to find out why nobody had been told about the bus that was out getting a roadworthy certificate.

Thus developed the objectives for the system :

DESIGN OBJECTIVES :

• - Ensure that ALL the peripheral activity is captured and referenced
• - Data to be very carefully structured to provide reusability
• - The process of reference must be a few simple clicks
• - ALL displays must be able to be printed when required
• - ALL displays to contain as much information as relevant
• - ALL information about changes and notes to operations to be stored
• - Bus and Driver selection must be graphical and easy to interpret
• - The selection screen must contain all decision making information
• - ALL the company procedures and policies must be automated
• - Once the information is collected, secure it in a non-editable form
• - AND use it for as many of the administration functions as possible
• - SUCH as Payroll, Statistics and Customer phone enquiries
• - Include Map references and Lost Property AND
• - With all this knowledge it might as well SIMULATE REAL TIME
• - AND use as much Free Software as possible to make it all REALLY INEXPENSIVE

The system was developed using Open Source ( freely available to the world like Linux ) software such as Apache, PHP and MySQL. These three products are used on at least 90% of the websites around the world. Users can use any browser to interface to BusWise.
